Workington Community Governance Review (Stage 2)

Closed 31 Oct 2018

Opened 3 Sep 2018

Allerdale Borough Council is currently undertaking a Community Governance Review of Workington Town Council. The Review was requested by the Town Council and the issues we are looking at are the overall boundary of the Town Council, its ward boundaries and the number of councillors representing each ward.

In addition we are asking for your views on whether there should be a separate parish council for the Moorclose area, because we have received a petition from residents of Moorclose asking us to consider this proposal.

Why we are consulting

The Town Councillors are elected by the residents of Workington. They do not receive an allowance for undertaking the role which includes:

  • Managing Allotments
  • Organising the annual Christmas lights
  • Running cultural events in the town
  • Managing Play areas in Newlands Lane, Vulcan Park, Walker Road, Wordsworth View in Salterbeck, Brewery House in Harrington, Bellaport Marina in Harrington, Cusack Crescent and Shore Side in Siddick.
  • Organising the Remembrance Day service and parade
  • Managing the Town Twinning arrangements
  • Running the Workington Nature Partnership  in association with Allerdale Borough Council
  • Dealing with local residents’ queries and concerns
  • Consultees on planning applications and budget setting by Allerdale Borough Council

As part of the Review we need to consult with local residents and interested parties to hear their views before proposing any changes. If we do make any changes to the way the Town Council is set up, they will come into effect in May 2019.

Please help us by completing the online survey and encourage anyone else you know who lives in the Workington Town Council area to complete it. If you are a member of a residents’ or community group in the area please let us know and we will ensure that we consult with the wider group.
