National Funding Formula and School Funding for 2018-19 and 2019-20

Closed 10 Nov 2017

Opened 9 Oct 2017

Following a national consultation in December 2016, the Department for Education (DfE) has announced that the National Funding Formula (NFF) will be available to be introduced from the 2018-19 financial year, with application to maintained schools from April 2018 and for academies from September 2018.

Why We Are Consulting

The introduction of the National Funding Formula is not mandatory for 2018-19 and 2019-20, and the DfE has said that these years will comprise ‘soft years’ whereby local authorities, in consultation with all schools, partners and the Schools Forum will be able to decide whether to introduce the national funding formula or continue to use a locally determined formula.

The Cumbria Schools Forum is consulting with all Cumbrian primary and secondary schools and CASL to seek views on whether the national funding formula should be introduced in Cumbria from April 2018, or whether the LA should continue to use the current funding formula.

The Cumbria Schools Forum encourage every school to respond. We kindly ask that there is only one response per school.

Two appendices are linked below to provide further information to schools.

  • Appendix 1 provides a comparison between the current factors in the Cumbria School Funding Formula and those in the National Funding Formula.
  • Appendix 2 provides projections of the impact of either formula on each individual school for 2018-19 and 2019-20. Projections are based on pupil numbers as at October 2016 to enable a like for like comparison.
