Windermere: Lake Action Plan 2017 to 2022

Closed 9 Jun 2017

Opened 19 Apr 2017

South Lakeland District Council and the Lake District National Park Authority have been reviewing the Windermere Management Strategy 2011 to produce a refreshed six year Lake Action Plan to address important issues for the Lake’s management.

The draft Action Plan has been developed through dialogue with a range of organisations and community representatives. The process began with a review of the previous strategy, lessons learnt and discussion over priorities for this next plan.

The draft Action Plan recognises the range of strategies and works that are already active throughout the wider Windermere and South Lakeland area which have influence on the Lake and its future. It seeks not to replicate these activities but bring a focus on a short series of breakthrough actions to be delivered through collaborative action between delivery organisations and stakeholders.  This draft Action Plan has two parts:

  • Windermere: Lake Action Plan 2017to 2022, which is the text of the plan
  • Breakthrough Actions table, which lists the actions, timetable for delivery and key delivery organisations

The draft Windermere: Lake Action Plan 2017 to 2022 is published for consultation, providing opportunity for organisations and individuals to comment on this important plan for the Lake.

We welcome your comments, please send them to

When responding, please state which part of the plan or action table your comment relates to.

Why We Are Consulting

Following the consultation period, it is intended to review the draft Action Plan in light of comments received and then to seek its adoption by the Lake District National Park Authority and South Lakeland District Council.

The final version of the Lake Action Plan will combine both documents into one overall plan.
